The King Abdullah bin Abdulaziz Zamzam Water Project at Kudai is where water from the Zamzam well is filtered, tested and bottled before distribution. It is one of the shortest Ziyarat-style trips from central Makkah and one of the most interesting for anyone curious about how the water reaches the Haram taps.

What you see

The plant handles treatment, ultraviolet sterilisation, quality testing and bottling on an industrial scale, filling containers that go to Masjid al-Haram, Masjid an-Nabawi and distribution points across the Kingdom.

Visits are typically a walk-through of the viewing areas with an explanation of the process. Access depends on the project's own visiting arrangements, which change with the season and the pilgrim load.

How the trip works

Kudai is a short drive south of the Haram — around fifteen minutes each way outside peak hours. The one-hour trip covers the drive, a visit and the return to your hotel, with the driver waiting throughout.

Because the visit is short, many pilgrims slot it between prayers rather than committing half a day.

Before you go

Confirm current visiting hours and any group requirements before booking, as the plant is a working facility rather than a tourist attraction and access is at its discretion. We can check what we know on the day when you message us.

If access is closed when you arrive, the driver can take you to another nearby site instead — just tell him what you would prefer.

Zamzam for the journey home

Sealed five-litre Zamzam containers for departing pilgrims are distributed through official points and at the airports, not sold at the plant. Airlines handle them as checked items under their own rules.

If you are flying soon, factor the boxes into your transfer vehicle choice — they take more boot space than most people expect.
