The Ihram stop at Dhul Hulaifah

Pilgrims travelling from Madinah normally assume Ihram at Dhul Hulaifah, better known as Abyar Ali, about eleven kilometres outside the city on the Makkah road. The masjid there has changing facilities and washrooms, and drivers on this route stop there as a matter of course.

Plan on twenty to forty minutes at the Miqat — longer in Ramadan and at weekends when several coaches arrive at once. Some travellers prefer to change into Ihram at the hotel and use the stop only for the two rak'ah and the intention; either way, tell your driver so he can time the journey.

Travel time and road conditions

It is about 430 kilometres, four hours of driving without stops, and closer to five with the Miqat and a rest break. The Al-Hijrah highway is a well-maintained dual carriageway for almost the whole distance.

The approach to Makkah is the unpredictable part. Checkpoints verify permits and vehicles, and in peak Umrah season the last stretch into the city can add half an hour. Arriving during the hours before Maghrib is the slowest; early morning arrivals are usually smooth.

Comfort in Ihram

Four hours in Ihram in a full car is uncomfortable. Vehicle choice matters more on this route than on almost any other: a seven-seater for a family of four or five costs a little more and makes a real difference, since two unstitched cloths and a seat belt in a cramped back seat is not a happy combination.

Drivers keep the air conditioning moderate rather than freezing, and will adjust it on request. It is worth carrying a small bag with sandals, a prayer mat and water within reach rather than in the boot.

Arriving in Makkah

Most pilgrims go straight from the car to Masjid al-Haram for Tawaf, so drop-off point matters. If your hotel is inside the Central Haram area, the driver will drop you as close as traffic control allows; hotels in Jabal Omar, Ajyad and along Ibrahim Al Khalil generally have direct access.

If you would rather be dropped at the Haram itself and have the luggage delivered to the hotel afterwards, that has to be arranged with your hotel — the driver can drop at either point, but not both.

Alternatives on this leg

The Haramain High Speed Railway covers Madinah to Makkah in about two and a half hours, but you must be in Ihram before boarding or accept a Miqat detour, and you still need transfers at both ends with luggage.

Buses are slower and stop often. A private car is the usual choice for families precisely because the Miqat stop, the luggage and the hotel-door drop-off all fit into one journey.

Madinah Hotel to Makkah Hotel Taxi — Questions Pilgrims Ask

Does the driver stop at Abyar Ali for Ihram?

Yes, Dhul Hulaifah (Abyar Ali) is the standard stop on this route and is included. Allow twenty to forty minutes there.

How long does Madinah to Makkah take by car?

About four hours of driving, or roughly five hours in total with the Miqat stop and a short rest break.

Should I book a bigger car if we are in Ihram?

Most families find a seven-seater far more comfortable for this leg. Four hours in Ihram in a fully loaded four-seater is tight, especially with cases.

Can we be dropped at the Haram instead of the hotel?

Yes, if traffic control allows access at that time. Tell the driver at pickup so he plans the final approach, and arrange luggage handling with your hotel.

Are drivers on this route Muslim?

Yes. Non-Muslims cannot enter Makkah, so every driver working this route is Muslim and familiar with both Haram cities.
