Makkah to Thawr Cave Taxi

Makkah to Thawr Cave Taxi

About 3 hours in total, including the climb

Jabal Thawr, south of Masjid al-Haram, holds the cave where the Prophet (peace be upon him) and Abu Bakr (may Allah be pleased with him) sheltered for three nights during the migration to Madinah. This is a return trip with the driver waiting at the base while you climb.

Where it is and how long it takes

The mountain is roughly four kilometres south of the Haram, fifteen to twenty-five minutes by car depending on traffic. The trip is scheduled at three hours, nearly all of it spent on the mountain.

The ascent is around 750 metres of rough path and rock — steeper and less developed than Jabal al-Nour. Reaching the cave and coming back down takes most people well over an hour and a half.

Thawr compared with Hira

Pilgrims who have climbed both usually describe Thawr as the harder of the two: fewer formed steps, looser rock in places, and less infrastructure at the summit. The cave entrance itself is a narrow gap that many visitors only look into rather than enter.

If you only have the energy for one climb, most people choose Hira. If you are doing both, spacing them across separate days is wiser than the same morning.

Practical preparation

Closed shoes with grip, a torch for pre-dawn or evening climbs, and at least a litre of water per person. Ihram is not required for Ziyarat, and climbing in Ihram in the heat is genuinely risky.

Leave spare clothing and bags in the vehicle; the driver stays with the car. Do not plan a climb immediately before a flight or a long transfer — legs need a day to recover.

The visit in perspective

This is a historical visit, not a ritual. There is no prescribed prayer at the cave, and scholars warn against treating the site itself as a source of blessing. Understanding the Hijrah — three nights of danger that changed the course of the early Muslim community — is what makes the climb meaningful.

If the climb is beyond you, the base of the mountain and the surrounding valley still give a clear sense of the terrain the Prophet crossed.

Makkah Hotel to Thawr Cave Climb & return (3 hrs) Taxi — Questions Pilgrims Ask

Is Jabal Thawr harder to climb than Hira?

Generally yes. The path is rougher and less developed, and the summit has fewer facilities. Allow more than an hour and a half up and down.

Does the driver wait during the climb?

Yes, for the duration of the three-hour trip, and then returns you to your hotel.

Do we need Ihram for this visit?

No. Ziyarat does not require Ihram, and climbing in Ihram in daytime heat is not advisable.

What should we take?

Closed shoes with grip, water, and a torch if you are going before dawn or after Isha.

Can we visit both caves in one trip?

It is possible but demanding. Most pilgrims book them separately, or take the wider Makkah Ziyarat tour which passes both mountains.
