Makkah to Hira Cave Taxi

Makkah to Hira Cave Taxi

About 3 hours in total, including the climb

Jabal al-Nour, the mountain holding the Cave of Hira where the first revelation came to the Prophet (peace be upon him), stands about four kilometres north-east of Masjid al-Haram. This is a return trip with waiting: the driver takes you to the base, waits while you climb, and brings you back to your hotel.

How the trip is timed

The drive each way is fifteen to twenty-five minutes. Almost all of the three hours goes on the mountain itself. The climb to the cave is roughly six hundred metres of ascent on stepped paths and rock; fit walkers manage up in forty to sixty minutes, and most pilgrims take longer.

If you want more than three hours at the mountain, tell us when booking and we will price the extra waiting time rather than have the driver leave without you.

What the climb is really like

This is not a gentle walk. The steps are uneven in places, there is little shade, and the last section near the cave narrows so queues form when a coach party arrives. People with knee or heart problems, and anyone in Ihram in daytime heat, should think carefully before starting.

Most pilgrims who climb go before Fajr or after Isha to avoid the sun. Night climbs are common and the path is lit in parts, but a torch and closed shoes with grip are still sensible. Carry at least a litre of water each.

Ziyarat etiquette at Hira

Visiting Jabal al-Nour is permissible as a historical visit, not an act of worship, and there is no prescribed prayer or ritual at the cave. Scholars caution against seeking blessings from the rock or the site itself. Reading about the event and reflecting on it is the point.

Vendors and photographers work the lower slopes; the paths get busy at weekends and throughout Ramadan.

Combining it with other sites

Many pilgrims pair Hira with the wider Makkah Ziyarat tour, which takes in Jabal Thawr, Masjid Ayesha, Jannat al-Mualla and the Mina and Arafat plains. If you would rather do everything in one outing, ask us about the Makkah Ziyarat tour instead of a single-site trip.

The driver stays with the vehicle throughout, so you can leave bags, water and shoes in the car while you climb.

Makkah Hotel to Hira Cave Climb & return (3 hrs) Taxi — Questions Pilgrims Ask

How long does the Hira Cave climb take?

Forty to sixty minutes up for fit walkers and often considerably longer for others, plus time at the top. The three-hour trip allows for the drive both ways and the climb.

Does the driver wait for us?

Yes, the driver stays at the base with the vehicle for the duration of the trip and takes you back to your hotel afterwards.

Is the climb suitable for elderly pilgrims?

Often not. The path is steep, uneven and largely unshaded. Many families visit the base and take photographs while only some members climb.

What is the best time to go?

Before Fajr or after Isha, to avoid the heat. Night visits are common; bring a torch, grippy shoes and water.

Can we extend the waiting time?

Yes. Tell us when booking and we will quote the longer trip rather than cut your visit short.
