Where Sarif is

Sarif lies roughly fifteen to twenty kilometres north of Makkah on the older Madinah road. The drive is twenty-five to thirty-five minutes each way, and the two-hour trip leaves time at the site and for the return.

The grave is enclosed and marked simply. There is a small masjid nearby, and the surroundings are quiet — a contrast to the busier Ziyarat stops inside the city.

The history

Maymoonah (may Allah be pleased with her) was married to the Prophet (peace be upon him) at Sarif after the Umrah of Qada, and she asked to be buried at the same place where the marriage took place. She died there years later.

Her narrations are part of the hadith corpus, and she is remembered particularly for reports concerning the Prophet's prayer and household practice.

How to visit

As with all graves, the visit is for reflection and to make du'a for the deceased. The grave is not touched, circled or used to seek blessings, and the enclosure is respected.

Modest dress and water are the practical requirements. There is limited shade and few facilities, so treat it as a short visit.

Combining with other stops

Sarif sits on the way north, so some pilgrims add it to a Madinah transfer or combine it with a Miqat stop. If you are leaving Makkah for Madinah anyway, ask us about including it rather than making a separate return trip.

The driver stays with the vehicle throughout, so bags and water can be left in the car.

Makkah Hotel to Grave of Maymoonah R.A. & return (2 hrs) Taxi — Questions Pilgrims Ask

Where is the grave of Maymoonah (R.A.)?

At Sarif, roughly fifteen to twenty kilometres north of Makkah on the old Madinah road — twenty-five to thirty-five minutes by car.

How long is the visit?

The trip is scheduled at about two hours in total, which allows a comfortable visit and the drive both ways.

What is the correct etiquette at the grave?

Make du'a for the deceased from outside the enclosure. The grave is not touched, circled, or used to seek blessings.

Can this be added to our Madinah journey?

Often yes, since Sarif is on the northern road. Ask us and we will quote the transfer with the stop included.

Are there facilities at the site?

Very few — a nearby masjid and little shade. Take water and keep the visit short in the middle of the day.
