Around 5 hours in total, including time at the site

Getting there

The drive is around 1 hour 45 minutes to 2 hours each way through open desert and volcanic hills. The road is good, and there is little traffic once you leave the Madinah ring road.

The five-hour trip allows roughly an hour and a half at Badr itself. Ask us if you want longer — some pilgrims prefer a slower visit with time to read the account of the battle at the site.

What you see at Badr

The valley is still recognisable from the accounts: the low hills the Muslim army held, the plain where the Quraysh camped, and the wells that gave the place its strategic value. The cemetery of the fourteen martyrs is enclosed and visited from outside the wall.

There is a small museum-style display and a masjid nearby. Standing on the ground with the geography in front of you does more for understanding the battle than any map.

Visiting with the right intention

This is a historical Ziyarat. Prayers are made for the martyrs as one would for any Muslim who has passed; the graves themselves are not touched, circled or used to seek blessings, and the enclosure keeps that clear.

Modest dress, water and sun protection are the practical requirements. There is very little shade in the valley.

Combining Badr with Makkah

Badr sits near the road between Madinah and Makkah, so many pilgrims visit it as a stop on the way rather than as a return trip. That is a separate route — Madinah or Makkah to the other city via Badr — and works out better value than doing both journeys separately.

If you are staying in Madinah for several days, the return trip is easier: you keep your hotel, travel light, and are back for Maghrib.
