Journey time

Four and a half to five and a half hours in total, including a stop. The road runs north on Highway 5 and Highway 15 past Rabigh and Mastura, dual carriageway for nearly the whole distance.

Leaving Jeddah early morning or late evening avoids the city's peaks. The Madinah end is generally easy to drive into at any hour.

Stops for prayer and food

Drivers break the journey at a service area with a masjid, washrooms and food, most often around Rabigh or Mastura. If a prayer time falls during the drive, say so at the start and the stop will be timed for it.

Families with young children usually prefer two shorter stops. Normal stops are included in the fare.

Choosing the vehicle

Five hours rewards a little extra space. Two or three travellers with two cases are comfortable in a Camry or Sonata; four or more people or cases should take a GMC, Staria or Chevrolet seven-seater.

Groups of eight to eleven use the Hiace, larger parties the Coaster 18-seater. Fares are per vehicle, so one larger car is usually cheaper than two smaller ones.

Car, train or flight

The Haramain train from Jeddah's Sulaimaniyah station reaches Madinah in about two hours, and a domestic flight is quicker still in the air. Both leave you with transfers and luggage handling at each end.

The car takes longer but stays a single journey from hotel door to hotel door, which is why families and groups with luggage generally choose it.
