Madinah to Wadi Jinn Taxi

Around 2 hours in total

Wadi Jinn, properly Wadi Al Baida, is a valley roughly forty kilometres north-west of Madinah known for a road where a vehicle in neutral appears to roll uphill. It is a short, curious outing that families with children particularly enjoy.

The trip in practice

Thirty to forty minutes each way, with roughly forty minutes in the valley — two hours all told from your hotel and back. The road out passes through black volcanic hills that look nothing like the city you just left.

Drivers who know the spot will stop at the right stretch, put the car in neutral, and let you watch. It is a simple thing, and it is genuinely strange to see.

What is actually happening

The effect is a gravity hill: the surrounding slopes and horizon trick the eye into misreading which way is downhill, so a car rolling downwards looks as though it is climbing. Similar spots exist around the world.

Local stories attribute it to jinn, which is where the popular name comes from, but there is no religious basis for treating the valley as a sacred site. It is a visit for interest, not for worship.

Who enjoys it

Families with children and anyone with a spare couple of hours between prayers. It pairs well with a Madinah Ziyarat tour on the same day if you have the energy, though that means around five hours out in total.

There are no facilities in the valley itself — no toilets, shops or shade — so treat it as a short excursion and take water.

Timing

Late afternoon is the most pleasant, with softer light on the volcanic rock and cooler air. Midday in summer is uncomfortable outside the car.

The valley is quiet on weekdays and busier at weekends, when local families drive out for the same reason you are.

Madinah Hotel to Wadi Jinn Ziyarat & return (2 hrs) Taxi — Questions Pilgrims Ask

Where is Wadi Jinn?

Wadi Al Baida, about forty kilometres north-west of Madinah — thirty to forty minutes by car each way.

Do cars really roll uphill there?

They appear to. It is a gravity-hill optical effect caused by the surrounding terrain; the car is in fact rolling downhill.

Is it a religious site?

No. Despite the popular name and the local stories, there is no religious basis for treating the valley as sacred. It is visited out of interest.

How long does the trip take?

About two hours from your hotel and back, including time in the valley.

Can we combine it with the Madinah Ziyarat tour?

Yes, though allow around five hours in total for both. Ask us and we will quote the combined outing.
